Know Your Divorce Options ™
November 20, 2017
“I have never divorced before; I am overwhelmed, I don’t know where to begin. I don’t want to spend all my money or have a nasty fight with my spouse. I don’t know where to start!!”
I have heard these words all too often from clients once the decision to divorce has been made. To be as helpful as I can, I go through my summary of choices that need to be made: what, when and how to tell the children; what type of legal process choices are available; what may be the short-term and long-term emotional impact on family members; how to make this process as healthy as possible. I explain that the financial and legal decisions that need to be made are among the most important decisions you will ever have to make and, yet you may not be able to focus and feel clear about your choices. The information I impart may be helpful and important and you will probably absorb about 10% of what I say.
To increase my ability to help educate you so you can make informed choices, I have become part of the Northern Virginia sponsoring group for Divorce Options ™ a low-cost public education program presented by lawyers, financial specialists and divorce coaches who have guided others through the divorce decision-making process.
In a 2-hour workshop, we give clear, concise information on the legal and financial issues to consider and how to recognize and manage the emotional impact so that you can make good decisions for yourself and your family. As professionals we walk you through the things to consider. We will help you know where to start. You will also receive a written Guest Guide, so that if the presentation seems a bit more than you can absorb, you will have materials to refer to later.
Choosing to divorce is a most difficult family decision. It is life changing and has long-term impact. The most important decision you have to make once you decide to divorce is to decide which process you will use to get to your separation agreement. That process does not have to be contentious or use all your resources. Educate yourself. Start with Divorce Options ™ and learn the next steps from there.
The rest of your life depends upon it.
